It was unlikely that this volcano could erupt. Mount Anatahan had not erupted throughout written history. But on May 10, 2003, this small volcano of the Northern Mariana Islands, in the western Pacific Ocean, threw ashes 10,000 meters away.

The explosions of Mount Anatahan continued to occur every few minutes, for two days. Ashes suspended in the air were very annoying, several flights were suspended in nearby Guam. Some rocks of more than one meter were catapulted by air. There were no injuries, since the team of seismologists who had casually placed detectors on the island a few days earlier, had already left. Fortunately they were not too far away and could take the picture.
